Menstrual Poetry: Crisis Pregnancy Centers Having to Tell People They Lie? Hells Yes!

  • Summerm · 1 year ago
I can't believe they even have to think about whether or not these centers should tell women they lie.
  • Jolene Blalock · 1 year ago
    Agreed. This is absurd.

Actually...although abortions do not lead to mental illness (that's just fucked up) they DO lead to mental instability. But it depends on the person and how they handle it. I wouldn't know how to explain that, but I've seen it happen. The rest...Breast Cancer? Please!!

I just typed a long comment about this and then windows crashed, so I'll just send you my blog entries about this issue and ask what you think. I'm still fighting the school board on this. I can't believe they did this.

Wow -- how unprofessional of these people! Lies, lies, and more lies from self-righteous assholes from all walks of life (religious, sociological, cultural, political...) is the only "support" women faced with this difficult decision are receiving. I applaud Maryland for taking a step towards improving the situation.

I just read ceejay's blog, as a follow-up to this post. It never ceases to amaze me the causes schools become involved in and the means they use to support said causes.
This $1 for t-shirt privileges must be an effective fund raiser, but why it should support these clinics is beyond me. Funds should not go to such controversial places-what a way to use schoolchildren!
I am grateful the comments from the former Surgeon General were included, that helped me appreciate the depth of this issue even more.
And I just have to add my own "That's Ridiculous!" to the unrelated and unsubstantiated claims:
    * Abortions lead to breast cancer.
    * Abortions lead to infertility.
    * Abortions lead to mental illness.
I just can't get over this.

They should not mislead the people especially women regarding the effect of abortion. And i think it's the choice of a woman if she wants abortion.
  • Colon · 1 year ago
I agree. They shouldn't mislead women about the effect of abortion...

Anyone feeding real lies should be shut down, lies only build more problems. I don't agree with abortion in most cases but even more I don't agree with lying to sway someone to my side.

In my opinion they should not mislead people especially women regarding the effect of abortion, it is very wrong.

How can you justify telling pregnant desperate women that their getting breastcancer, mental ilness or become infertile from abortion. And how can any intelligent woman actually believe this is true?
Why do Crisis pregnancy centers believe that abortion is not the solution and what is the solution accoording to them? Bringing an unwanted child into this world or putting it up for adoption maybe?
These centers seem to have their own dirty little agenda for this and should be closed down.

I think they should give advice, but as to pressuring someone to do something that they don't want to by giving them wrong information.

Preface -- I'm pro choice but not a big fan of abortion. That being said multiple therapeutic abortions ARE generally associated with infertility. This is standard teaching in medical textbooks. Now, whether this is because failure to use birth control is associated with STD/PID (which is absolutely a big cause of secondary infertility) or because multiple D&Cs cause scarring in the uterus that make future implantation difficult is (AFAIK) unknown.

That also being said, if you're going in for the 3rd abortion or so, you're unlikely to end up at one of these counseling centers.

There actually are quite a few stats that show the incidence of breast-cancer is higher following an abortion. It is related to the high output of progesterone during pregnancy, which comes quickly crashing down after the abortion.

Would you also support legislation closing down Planned Parenthood clinics that are shown to protect statutory rapists? That is pretty much all of them...

I actually did research on the mental illness claim for a paper when I was in grad school. Some women who do have abortions report depression later, as well as some who don't. The common thread? The women who don't get to go with their first or gut choice or true choice, in other words, who are pushed into either having an abortion or not having one by family, partner, crisis pregnancy center, well meaning friends, etc., are the ones who have mental health issues afterward. Those women who either chose abortion or continuing the pregnancy and who both believed in that choice and who felt supported in it did just fine mental health wise. So, abortion can cause depression if a woman doesn't really want to have one. If she does, there is no evidence to support an abortion/MI link.

And as far as the breast cancer link, the risk is also elevated in those who have never been pregnant and those, like me, who have had multiple miscarriages despite wanting the pregnancies. Basically, carrying a pregnancy to full term, especially in earlier adulthood, is a protective factor against breast cancer. For those who don't or can't do so, the risk is elevated. But it seems like a stretch to say that breast cancer and abortion are linked.

Daisy said: "And how can any intelligent woman actually believe this is true?"

There's a big difference between "intelligent" and "informed." Lots of smart ladies out there simply don't know much about abortions because it isn't something they ever expected to need to know about. Or they place much faith and trust in trained medical professionals (as most of us do) and can be easily misled by the wrong practitioner.

The mental instability mentioned by Jenny probably is more of a consequence of discrimination, fear of reprisal and condemnation, and/or harassment from others. While we may be pro-choice, that doesn't mean the rest of the world is, and there are plenty of people out there itching for an opportunity to give you a piece of their mind on issues such as this. I'd imagine the social consequences and criticism lead to more mental anguish than the abortion itself in many cases.

It is so shameful that so many women have to still face this kind of brainwashing and emotional browbeating today when they choose to have this procedure done. Whta happened to the basic fact that it is their body and their choice? No one, including these so called clinics, seem to remember that. I hate that abortion has become such a political issue- quite frankly I still believe that it still a women's health issue and that no matter what a woman should have the right to choose no matter who is in office.
  • annakat · 1 year ago
I had no idea that they were telling such things. I agree they should only tell true factual medical facts. Matter of fact there should be a medical pamphlet that has been approved by the medical association given to the girls. Any clinic that give's any other advise needs to be closed and the personnel prosecuted.

it is true that repeated abortions can cause uterine scarring and asherman's syndrome. i have had two abortions and politically are not against them, but because this has become such a political issue, abortion advocates lie too. any kind of d&C, whether for miscarriage or abortion, can cause uterine scarring and lead to infertility. see www.ashermans.org.

In my opinion they should only tell true factual medical facts, who gave them the privileges to play with emotions of a woman. They should be punished. They should not mislead people, it is wrong.

I believe every woman should have the choice of abortion, but I believe they need to know all the facts beforehand. However, I believe they should know the true facts and not have someone scare them out of the choice they want.
