I agree 100% with your last paragraph. Sex ed is too much about scaring kids away, and teaches nothing. The facts are that, if its going to happen, it will. We need to arm teenagers with the correct information, so they know how to make the right choice.

I read this somewhere else and thought it was (belated) April fools, until now... I have to say I'm stunned those teens believe this. I know this stupidy exist in some third world countries, but come on: the US? When are people gonna wake up and realise teenagers need proper sex education. Forget religion, education & health is much more important.

But if you don't talk about sex then obviously kids will not have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha

Sex education in my state (PA) is supposed to be abstinence only, but even then we were still taught all about sex, birth control, stds, prevention, etc in a very reasonable way. Although they did make us watch one video about AIDS, where a kid in it asked at the end, "But what if we decide to have sex anyways?" and the video instructor replied, "Well, then I guess you'll just have to be prepared to die." D

I went to a Catholic school. Nuff said. 'm glad I had a sensible mother ( a Nurse) who counselled me about the pill, condoms and the like. I hope I'm doing as good a job with my son. Can't depend on anyone else, they really have no idea about educating teens.

On another note, I can't add my link. Why?
  • Wrhona · 1 year ago
I agree. I think that they should be given the right information to apply at this time and not the do's and don't's because probably most of them have already done it.

I've never heard of that article before, but Mountain Dew and bleach? man...crazy stuff to believe in..that's probably why Mountain Dew is doing a great job with their product huh? hehehe

    Thanks for your comment!

I agree with this entire post. Well said.

This is a really interesting topic. It is true that with teaching abstinence-sex, some teens just had to try it for themselves and try stupid things to prevent getting diseases or getting pregnant.

HaHa!! I live in Orlando and I'd believe that kids are that stupid. I swear, Florida is one messed up place. If you stay on the coast it's ok though. My sister and I are from the coast and my cousins are in Orlando. Both of my cousins got pregnant at a very young age whereas I don't think I'll have a kid for another 5 years. XD

Anyway, I think that sex ed is INCREDIBLY important. Both of my parents are anatomy teachers and they taught me much more than was ever covered in sex ed. Unfortunately many girls and boys are misinformed or uneducated about this subject and are too lazy or ignorant to go out and find the information themselves. Almost everyone can access the internet and certainly everyone has access to a library. Or even Planned Parenthood, which there are 3 of in Orlando.

That whole 'pretend it doesn't exist and it will go away' theory of handling important (and uncomfortable for many people) issues is frightening. As a high school educator, I know that the problems are not going to go away. I mean, I am standing in front of my AP World History kids, the smart and good kids, and I hear the girl in the front whisper to her friend, "I'm not pregnant." And I am stunned. This girl is 15.

Instead of pretending sex doesn't exist or only teaching that abstaining from it is effective, we need to focus on giving our kids the right ideas and tools to handle these issues.

Mountain dew and marijuana? How is that supposed to work? Maybe if we stopped spending billions on foreign wars and more on public education this might not be such a major problem.
  • Another Mark · 1 year ago
The word "cuddle" in that last response, combined with the original post, is a hilarious typo IMO!
  • Mark · 1 year ago
We cuddle kids way too much in this country. I took sex ed and everything is fine. What we should teach is other alternatives to intercourse and safe sex. the more you say "no" to a teen, the more they want to do it. thanks for posting.

I should say that 'Safe sex education' is must for teenagers, however in India a husband i feeling shame to talk on such topic with her wife.

Surely teens can't actually be believing that drinking a cap full of bleach will prevent HIV? And Mountain Dew and marijuana ??? Come on who's actually telling people this?!
  • Dave · 1 year ago
I think abstinence-only education is absurd too, but I have to wonder, where are these kids' parents? I'm getting awfully tired of all the blame being put on the schools for this stuff. The schools are doing a terrible job, clearly, but the parents are doing even worse.

I've raised a 20 year old girl and had a heck of a time competing with the media's thurst for pushing the envelope.
Now I've got 2year old triplet girls and I'm considering limiting media access much more.

All the media talks about is change is good. Well this is one father that does not agree!

Marijuana is the one drug that you will hear more myths and untruths from both the for and against, more so than any other. Still I have never heard that it can stop you getting pregnant. It makes you wonder what’s wrong with not just our sex education but drugs education as well, if kids are believing that.

I remember something back in my teenage years ( haha only a few years ago) when nobody would drink Mountain Dew because it supposedly lowered your sperm count. Still ridiculous. Regarding marijuana anandamide the natural occuring endocannabinoid in your body has been linked to the communication between fetus and mother early in pregnancy. I still think we need more EDUCATION.!
